Building letters

Building letters are seen from far away and stay up for many years, so size, material and the wall behind them matter most. Brushed 304 stainless steel letters are the most chosen for facades, entrances and monuments: they do not rust through and suit stone, concrete and glass. Decide on lighting before you order, because non-lit letters cannot be lit later without rebuilding them.

From idea to switch-on

  1. Measure the wall and the main viewing distance: the road, the parking lot or the plaza.
  2. Check the city sign code and any property or design review rules for size and lighting.
  3. Send the name or logo with a straight-on photo of the wall for a free drawing.
  4. Approve the drawing and use it for the permit; we can prepare permit drawings from it if your city asks for more.
  5. Your installer mounts the letters with the full-size template and the studs supplied.

Tip: Measure the viewing distance from where people stand or drive to the letters themselves. Letters high on a building are farther away than they look from the street, so they usually need to be taller than the wall alone suggests.

Questions

Why stainless steel instead of aluminum?

304 stainless steel does not rust through and can be left bare in a brushed or mirror finish, which suits facades that stay up for years. Aluminum letters are lighter and are usually painted.

Can large letters be mounted on stone or brick?

Yes. They mount flush on threaded studs set in drilled holes, marked from the full-size paper template. Your installer chooses the anchors and adhesive for the wall type.

Can lighting be added to non-lit letters later?

Not without rebuilding them, because lit letters are built with room inside for LEDs and a translucent back or face. If you may want them lit, order halo-lit letters now; by day they look much the same as plain brushed letters.

How tall should building letters be?

Plan about 1 in of letter height for every 10 ft of viewing distance, measured to where people read them. Letters read from a road 200 ft away need to be about 20 in tall, and the city sign code may cap the total sign area.
