Painted metal letters are non-lit dimensional letters in your exact color. Each letter is 304 stainless steel, face and returns, painted the color you choose in a matte, satin or gloss finish. They put a brand color on a wall in a way that vinyl or paint on the wall cannot: the letters stand out from the surface and cast their own shadows. Some call them painted dimensional letters or colored metal letters.

They suit storefronts and offices that need the logo color right, restaurants and studios with a strong palette, schools and clinics, and homes that want a house name or a word on a feature wall.

Color is matched from a code, not guessed. Send a Pantone, RAL or paint brand color code, and the color is shown on your drawing for approval before anything is painted. No code yet? Pick a chip at a paint store and send its brand and code.

The sheen changes the look as much as the color:

  • Matte has no shine. It reads flat and modern and shows no glare from windows or lights.
  • Satin has a soft sheen and sits between the two.
  • Gloss reflects light and makes the color look richer and deeper.

By day the letters read through color and shadow. Contrast with the wall is what makes them legible from a distance: dark letters on a light wall, light letters on a dark one. Letters painted close to the wall color read only by their shadows, which looks refined up close but is harder to read from the street. At night, non-lit letters are seen only by the light that falls on them, so plan wall lighting if they need to work after dark, or look at halo-lit letters.

The letters can go indoors or outdoors. Under the paint, 304 stainless steel does not rust through. Each set has threaded studs on the back and comes with a full-size paper template marking every hole, plus the mounting hardware. They mount flush to the wall. Installation is not included.

How to choose

Begin with contrast. Hold your color chip against the wall in daylight: if the two are close, the letters will read only by their shadows. That is fine for a lobby or a home, but a storefront that must be read from the street needs a clear light-on-dark or dark-on-light difference.

Pick the sheen for the setting. Matte for modern interiors and walls that face windows or bright lights; gloss when you want the richest color and a polished look; satin when you are unsure.

Find your exact color code from your brand guide, your printer or the paint store chip. Send it with your text or logo, the wall size and a photo of the wall, and the drawing shows the letters in your color at real size.

Questions

What color code should I send?

A Pantone or RAL number, or the brand and code of a paint color from a paint store chip. The color is shown on your drawing for approval before anything is painted.

Matte, satin or gloss?

Matte has no shine and shows no glare, satin has a soft sheen, and gloss reflects light and makes color look richest. Choose matte for walls facing windows or bright lights.

Can painted letters go outdoors?

Yes. They can be used indoors or outdoors, and the 304 stainless steel under the paint does not rust through.

Can the letters be the same color as my wall?

Yes. Tone-on-tone letters read only by their shadows, which looks refined up close but is harder to read from a distance.

How are they installed?

Drill the holes marked on the full-size paper template, set the threaded studs into them and press the letters flush to the wall. Installation is not included.

Will the color look the same as on my screen?

Not always. Screens and printers show color differently, which is why we match from a Pantone, RAL or paint brand code instead of a picture. If the color is critical, hold the printed chip against the wall in daylight before you approve the drawing.

How do I clean painted letters?

Wipe them with a soft cloth and water with a little mild soap, then rinse and dry. Skip abrasive pads, scouring powder and solvents, which can dull or scratch the paint.

How big should the letters be?

Size them for the distance people will read from; our letter height calculator gives a starting point. The price estimator covers letters from 4 in to 60 in tall, and the drawing shows them in your color at real size.
