Lit house numbers, desktop letters and battery halo letters

Not every sign goes on a storefront. These are the small ones, built the same way as our full-size letters. That includes backlit address numbers, desk signs and wireless light-up letters.

Halo-lit house numbers are 304 stainless steel digits in matte black, brushed or gold with a translucent acrylic back. LEDs inside glow onto the wall behind, so the address reads at night without a porch light. Outdoor numbers run on 12 V from an outdoor power supply or low-voltage transformer, mount flush with studs and a full-size template, and a dusk-to-dawn photocell can turn them on by itself. Many cities and fire departments ask for address numbers of a minimum height that contrast with the wall, so check your local rule; the lit house numbers guide covers what to look for.

Desktop letters are small front-lit or halo-lit letters on a slim metal base for a reception desk, counter, shelf or trade show table. A recent example is a tabletop sign about 24 in wide with letters about 6 in tall, powered by a 12 V plug-in adapter.

Battery halo letters run from a rechargeable battery pack with a remote, so they need no outlet and no electrician. They suit rented spaces, pop-ups, events and photo walls. Run time depends on letter size, brightness and hours on, and it is confirmed on your drawing. The guide to battery-powered letters explains what affects it, and our house numbers project shows the numbers at home.

  • Check your city's address rule for minimum number height and contrast before you choose a size.
  • Add a dusk-to-dawn photocell so the numbers light up at dusk without a switch.
  • Battery letters suit events and rentals; for a sign lit every evening, a plug-in adapter is simpler.
  • On a desk or counter, warm white with a dimmer is easier on the eyes up close.
  • On lap siding or rough brick, mount house numbers on a smooth backer panel so the halo stays even.

Questions

How tall should house numbers be?

Many cities and fire departments set a minimum height and ask for numbers that contrast with the wall and can be read from the street. Check your local rule; we build lit numbers from 4 in to 16 in tall.

Can my house numbers turn on by themselves at night?

Yes. A dusk-to-dawn photocell switches them on at dusk and off at dawn, and it can be wired in when you order.

How long do battery halo letters run?

It depends on the letter size, the brightness and how many hours a day they are on. We confirm the run time for your letters on the drawing.

Do desktop letters need an electrician?

No. They plug into a standard outlet through a 12 V adapter, so you can set them on a desk or counter and switch them on.

Do businesses need bigger address numbers?

Often, yes. The fire code sets 4 in as a minimum, and many local codes ask for 6 in or more on commercial buildings or buildings set far back from the road. Check with your fire department.

How do battery halo letters charge?

The battery pack charges over USB-C. Place it behind a backer panel or on a thin lead to a shelf where you can reach it.
