Front-lit channel letters in 304 stainless steel

Front-lit channel letters, also called face-lit or LED channel letters, are the classic storefront sign. Each letter is a hollow shape with 304 stainless steel returns, a translucent acrylic face and LED modules inside. At night the whole face glows evenly, which makes this the easiest lit style to read from the road.

There are two edge styles. Trim cap letters hold the face with a 1 in plastic trim cap that laps about 1/4 in onto it. Trimless letters set the face on the front edge of the return, so only the lit face shows; they suit thin strokes and small letters. The guide to trim cap vs trimless compares the two.

Want more from the same letters? Front-and-back lit letters add a halo on the wall behind the glowing face, and RGB letters change color from a remote. For leased storefronts, letters on a raceway arrive pre-mounted on a slim box painted to match the fascia.

Plan color and rules early. White faces give the most light at night, while deep blues and greens look darker when lit; the lit preview on your free drawing shows each color. Most cities ask for a permit for an outdoor sign, and a lit sign usually needs an electrical permit too; our permit drawings are made from your approved design. Some shopping centers require a raceway and others ban exposed raceways, so read your sign criteria first. If the fire marshal asks for flame-retardant faces, we swap the acrylic for polycarbonate.

Every set mounts flush to the wall with a full-size paper template and runs on 12 V LEDs with a UL-listed power supply and LED modules. Outdoor builds use IP65 modules and a hard-wired power supply. Use the letter height calculator to size your letters and the price estimator for a quick range; the free drawing gives the exact price.

  • Size the letters for your farthest reader; the letter height calculator does the math.
  • White faces give the most light at night; colored acrylic or vinyl overlays match brand colors.
  • Strokes under about 1 in wide are usually built trimless, so the trim cap does not crowd the face.
  • Read your lease first: many landlords ask for a raceway to limit holes in the facade.
  • Deep blue and green faces glow darker than white; check them in the lit preview.
  • Outdoors, a dusk-to-dawn photocell or timer switches the sign for you; some energy codes require automatic control.

Questions

What is the difference between front-lit and halo-lit letters?

Front-lit letters have an acrylic face that glows, so the letters themselves light up. Halo-lit letters have a solid metal face and light the wall behind them, so you see a glow around each letter.

How deep are front-lit channel letters?

The return depth is set on your drawing; 3 in and 5 in are the most common depths. Small trimless letters can be shallower.

Can front-lit letters go outdoors?

Yes. Outdoor builds use IP65-rated LED modules and a hard-wired outdoor power supply that a licensed electrician connects. Indoor sets plug in through an adapter.

What light colors can I choose?

White 6500 K, neutral white 4000 K or warm white 3000 K. RGB color-changing letters are a separate option.

Can the letters match my brand colors?

Yes. Faces come in white or colored acrylic, or white acrylic with a colored vinyl overlay, and the returns can be painted to your color or left brushed.

Do I need a permit for front-lit letters?

Usually. Most cities ask for a sign permit for an outdoor sign, and a lit sign usually needs an electrical permit by a licensed electrician too. Permits are not included, but we can prepare permit drawings from your approved design; check your city's rules before you order.

Flush mount or raceway?

Flush-mounted letters leave nothing behind them by day, but each letter needs its own fasteners and wire hole. A raceway holds the wiring and power supply, so only a few holes go into the building; some landlords require it, and some shopping centers ban exposed raceways.

What sizes can you make?

The price estimator covers letters from 4 in to 60 in tall, and the drawing sets the exact size for your wall. Use the letter height calculator to match the height to your viewing distance.
