Trimless front-lit letters, also called no-trim or trimcap-free channel letters, light up the same way as our standard front-lit (face-lit) channel letters, but without the plastic trim cap around the face. The acrylic face sits on the front edge of the 304 stainless steel return, so from the front you see only the lit face: no rim and no outline in a second color.

The difference is small on paper and obvious on the wall. A trim cap is 1 in wide and laps about 1/4 in onto the face. On bold block letters read from across a parking lot, nobody notices it. On a stroke 1 in wide, a cap on both sides covers half of the lit face, and thin serifs, scripts and lowercase logos lose their detail. Trimless keeps each letter as drawn, which is why small letters with strokes under about 1 in are usually built this way.

There is also no plastic at the edge to age. After years of strong sun a trim cap can fade, loosen or turn wavy; a trimless letter has no cap to wear.

Small trimless letters can be as shallow as 3/4 in deep, which suits interior walls, reception areas and boutique fronts where a deep letter would look heavy. Larger letters get deeper returns; the depth is set on your drawing.

Behind the face, everything matches our trim cap letters:

  • 304 stainless steel returns, painted black, white or your color, or left brushed.
  • White translucent acrylic face, or colored acrylic or vinyl for brand colors.
  • 12 V LED modules in white 6500 K, neutral 4000 K or warm white 3000 K.
  • Indoor plug-in adapter, or IP65 modules and a hard-wired outdoor power supply outside.
  • Flush mounting with a full-size paper template and hardware; raceway, photocell and timer as options.
  • Sizes: 4 in to 60 in tall in the price estimator.

By day the letters show a clean face with a slim band of return color at the sides. At night only the faces glow, with sharp edges and nothing around them.

Trimless costs a little more than trim cap; the price estimator on this page shows the difference. Send your logo or text and the wall size, and we email a free drawing with a lit preview and the exact price before anything is built. The power supply and LED modules are UL / cUL listed components. Installation, permits and the electrician are not included.

How to choose

Look at the thinnest stroke in your logo at the size you want. If it is under about 1 in, trimless is usually the only way to keep the shape. Above that, both styles work and it comes down to the look: bold block letters read the same either way, and trim cap costs a little less.

Where people stand close, indoors or on a boutique front, the clean edge of a trimless face is easier to appreciate. Choose the return finish for the wall: black or brushed returns show as a crisp edge from the side, while returns painted to match the wall almost disappear. If your logo has a deep blue or green, check it in the lit preview, since dark colors glow less.

Send your logo file, the wall size and a photo of the wall. The drawing shows the letters at real size with their depth and lit preview.

Questions

What is the difference between trimless and trim cap letters?

A trim cap is a 1 in plastic edge that holds the face and laps about 1/4 in onto it, so every letter gets a thin outline. Trimless letters have no cap: the face sits on the front edge of the stainless return and only the lit face shows.

Can trimless letters go outdoors?

Yes. Outdoor builds use IP65 LED modules and a hard-wired outdoor power supply that a licensed electrician connects, the same as our trim cap letters.

How small can trimless letters be?

The price estimator starts at 4 in tall, and small letters can be as shallow as 3/4 in deep. Fine strokes that a trim cap would cover stay visible.

Do trimless letters cost more?

A little. The price estimator on this page shows trimless and trim cap prices from our recent quotes, and your drawing gives the exact price.

Can I install them myself?

Installation is not included. Indoor letters plug in, so a handy person can mount them with the paper template and hardware. Outdoor letters need a licensed electrician for the power connection, and many cities require a sign permit.

Which logos need trimless letters?

Logos with thin strokes, scripts, fine serifs or small lowercase letters. If the thinnest stroke is under about 1 in at the size you want, a trim cap would cover too much of it, so we usually build those letters trimless.

Can trimless faces be in my brand colors?

Yes. The face can be colored acrylic, or white acrylic with a vinyl overlay in your brand color. White faces give the most light at night, and the lit preview on your drawing shows how each color looks.

What file should I send?

A vector file, such as AI, EPS, SVG or PDF, gives the most exact drawing, which matters with fine strokes. If you only have an image, send it with your wall size; we redraw your logo to scale for the free drawing.
