Open-face LED neon channel letters and marquee bulb letters
These two styles show their light source on purpose. They give a sign the warmth of old neon and theater marquees, without the glass.
Open-face channel letters, also called exposed neon or neon-style letters, are 304 stainless steel channels with no face. LED neon runs along the centerline of each stroke, held by clips and usually set toward the front of the channel, so the line of light reads clearly from the street. LED neon is flexible silicone, runs on 12 V and does not get hot the way glass neon does. The channel can be painted black or any color, brushed stainless or gold, and the neon comes in white, warm white or colors. Each stroke is fitted by hand, so a small open-face sign can cost as much as a much larger front-lit one. The open-face neon guide covers the look and the care. Compared with a front-lit letter, which glows as an even face, an open-face letter shows the line of light itself.
Marquee letters, also called light-up or bulb letters, are deep, open metal letters with a row of bulbs across the face. They come as indoor plug-and-play letters with a 120 V plug, or as a weatherproof build for permanent outdoor use, which an electrician connects. Finishes include painted, pre-rusted galvanized steel and brushed stainless. They are made for venues, restaurants, event rentals, weddings and photo walls, where letters about 3 to 5 ft tall are common; see the marquee letters guide.
Both styles suit a bar or lounge and events and weddings. The price estimator gives a first range.

- Pick the neon color with the wall in mind: warm white reads softer, colors read bolder.
- Dust settles in an open channel; a soft brush now and then keeps the neon bright.
- Marquee letters for one-off events are usually the plug-in indoor build.
- Check the look and width of your word in the sign preview.
- For a photo wall, marquee letters about 3 to 5 ft tall frame the people standing beside them.

Questions
Is LED neon the same as glass neon?
No. LED neon is a flexible silicone light line that runs on 12 V and does not get hot like glass neon. It gives a similar continuous glow without glass tubes or high-voltage transformers.
Can open-face letters go outdoors?
Yes, as an outdoor build with an outdoor power supply that a licensed electrician hard-wires. The drawing shows the build for your location.
Why do open-face letters cost more per letter?
Each stroke is fitted with LED neon by hand, so the work depends on the length of every stroke rather than just the letter height.
Are marquee letters for indoor or outdoor use?
Both. The indoor build plugs into a 120 V outlet; the weatherproof build is for permanent outdoor use and is connected by an electrician.
How big can marquee letters be?
Our recent quotes include letters from about 16 in to 48 in tall, and the estimator goes up to 72 in. Ask us if you need another size.
What is the difference between open-face and front-lit letters?
Do open channels collect dirt?
Yes. Dust, leaves and sometimes birds get into an open channel, more so outdoors. Switch the sign off and brush the channels out now and then.
Can marquee letters spell a word or initials?
Yes. Each character is built as its own letter, so you can order a word, initials or a number. Free-standing bases let them move from one event to the next.
