LED lightbox signs and projecting blade signs

A lightbox sign, also called a cabinet sign, is a metal cabinet with a translucent face printed with your artwork and LEDs inside that light the whole face evenly. It shows a full-color logo, a long name or a short list of services in one piece, and the face can be changed later when the artwork changes. You may also see it called a light box, box sign or illuminated cabinet; a blade sign is also known as a projecting or flag sign.

There are three ways to get one:

  • A custom LED lightbox built to your size: indoor plug-in or a weather-sealed outdoor cabinet, single or double sided, on a wall, hanging or on a post.
  • A round LED lightbox, 24 or 30 in across, with your logo printed on the face. It is an indoor plug-in sign in fixed sizes, so you can order it directly and approve a proof of your logo before production.
  • A blade sign, a double-sided lit sign that projects from the wall on a steel bracket so people walking along the street can read it from both directions.

Not sure whether a cabinet or individual letters suits your building? The guide to channel letters vs lightbox signs compares them side by side.

For a blade sign, read your city's sign code first. Cities usually limit how far a sign may project and require clear space above the sidewalk; the guide to blade and projecting signs explains what to check. Outdoor cabinets are hard-wired by a licensed electrician and run on 12 V LEDs with a UL-listed power supply and LED modules. The price estimator prices a custom box by width and height.

  • Keep the artwork short: a logo and a few words read better from the street than a paragraph.
  • When your details change, replace the face and keep the cabinet and LEDs.
  • Before ordering a blade sign, check your city's projection limit and sidewalk clearance.
  • Add a dusk-to-dawn photocell so an outdoor cabinet lights itself at dusk.
  • At night a mostly white face glows as one bright panel; a darker background with light lettering reads cleaner.

Questions

What is the difference between a lightbox and channel letters?

A lightbox is one cabinet with the whole face lit, so the background glows with the artwork. Channel letters are built one by one and only the letters light up.

Can I order the round lightbox without a quote?

Yes. It comes in fixed sizes, 24 or 30 in, single or double sided. After you order, we email a proof of your logo on the face to approve before production.

How high does a blade sign have to hang?

Your city decides. Many US sign codes ask for about 8 ft of clear space between the sidewalk and the bottom of a projecting sign, and some ask for more.

Can a lightbox go outdoors?

Yes, as a weather-sealed cabinet with IP65-rated LED modules and an outdoor power supply that a licensed electrician hard-wires.

Can I change the artwork later?

Yes. The face is a separate part of the cabinet, so a new printed face can replace the old one while the cabinet and LEDs stay.

Does a lightbox need a permit?

Outdoor cabinets usually do, and cities limit how much sign area each storefront may have. Check with your city before you settle on a size; permits and installation are not included.

Does a blade sign need a strong wall?

Yes. It catches wind on both faces, so the bracket must be fastened into solid structure such as framing or masonry. Have a sign installer check the wall; some cities ask for engineered designs.
