Get my free drawing and exact priceA lightbox sign, also called a cabinet sign, is a metal cabinet with a translucent face printed with your artwork and LEDs inside that light the whole face evenly. It is the simplest way to put a full-color logo, a name and a phone number, or a short list of services on a wall and have all of it read clearly at night. You may also see it called a light box, a box sign or an illuminated cabinet.
We build each cabinet to the size you need. Recent builds include an indoor single-sided box 24.5 x 37 in and outdoor cabinets 98 x 15 in and 120 x 48 in. You choose:
- Indoor or outdoor. Indoor boxes plug in through a 12 V adapter. Outdoor cabinets are weather-sealed, use IP65-rated LED modules and a hard-wired outdoor power supply that a licensed electrician connects.
- Single or double sided. A single-sided box sits flat on a wall. A double-sided box hangs, projects from a wall or stands on a post, so it reads from both directions.
- Wall, hanging or post mount.
The LEDs run on 12 V DC, and the power supply and LED modules are UL-listed components. Because the face is a separate part of the cabinet, it can be changed later when your logo, hours or services change, without replacing the box or the lighting.
Ordering works the same way as for our letters. Send your artwork and the size of the wall or the space you want to fill. We email a free drawing that shows the box to scale, a lit preview and the exact price, and nothing is built until you approve it. If you want a rough number first, the price estimator gives a range by width and height.
Design the face for night as well as day. A face that is mostly white glows as one bright panel after dark, while a darker or colored background with light lettering makes the words stand out with less glare. The lit preview on your drawing shows how it will read at night.
Installation, the sign permit and the electrician who connects an outdoor cabinet are not included. Cities limit how much sign area each storefront may have, so check your allowance before you settle on a size.
How to choose
Start with where the box goes. Inside a shop window or on an interior wall, an indoor plug-in box is enough. On the outside of the building, choose the outdoor cabinet and plan for an electrician to connect it.
Then count the faces. A box flat on the wall needs one face. A sign that sticks out from the wall, hangs under a canopy or stands on a post needs two, so people coming from both directions can read it. For a small sign that projects over a sidewalk, look at the blade sign too.
For the size, measure the clear space on the wall and leave a margin around the box. Keep the artwork short: a logo and a few words read better from the street than a full paragraph. Send your artwork (vector files are best) and a photo of the wall with a tape measure in view.
Questions
What is the difference between a lightbox and channel letters?
A lightbox is one cabinet with the whole face lit, so the background glows along with the logo and full-color artwork prints in one piece. Channel letters are built one letter at a time and only the letters light up, which gives a cleaner look on the wall.
Can I change the artwork later?
Yes. The face is a separate part, so when your logo or details change, a new face is printed to the cabinet size and swapped in. The cabinet and the LEDs stay.
Can a lightbox go outdoors?
Yes, as an outdoor build: a weather-sealed cabinet with IP65-rated LED modules and an outdoor power supply that a licensed electrician hard-wires. Indoor boxes plug in and are for indoor use.
How is it mounted?
A single-sided box mounts flat on the wall with the hardware and the full-size paper template that come with it. Double-sided boxes hang, project from the wall or sit on a post, and the drawing shows the mounting method before you approve it.
Can I install it myself?
An indoor plug-in box can be hung by anyone comfortable with a drill and a level, as long as the wall can hold it. An outdoor cabinet is hard-wired, so a licensed electrician must connect it, and many cities require a sign permit first.
What file should I send?
A vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) gives the sharpest print. If you only have a photo or a screenshot of your logo, send the largest version you have and we redraw it for the drawing.
Does a lightbox need a sign permit?
An outdoor cabinet usually does, and cities limit how much sign area each storefront may have. Check with your city before you settle on a size. Installation and permits are not included; our permit drawing package can help with the paperwork.
Can it turn on and off by itself?
Yes. An outdoor cabinet can use a dusk-to-dawn photocell and a timer on its power feed, wired by the electrician. An indoor plug-in box works with our plug-in timer.
