Repair parts for channel letters and lightboxes

When a channel letter sign fails, it is usually one part, not the whole sign. A run of LED modules dies, a face cracks or fades, or a power supply gives out. Replacing that part costs far less than a new sign. Sign shops call the light parts LED sign modules or injection modules.

Start by finding the problem:

  • One letter dark, the rest lit: usually LED modules or a connection inside that letter.
  • The whole sign dark: check the circuit, any photocell or timer, and then the power supply.
  • Flickering: often a loose connection or a power supply that is overloaded or failing.

The guide to troubleshooting channel letters goes step by step.

The parts:

  • LED modules for channel letters: 12 V, three LEDs per module, IP65, adhesive back, in white 6500 K, warm white 3000 K or red. Match the color already in the sign. How to replace LED modules shows the job.
  • A replacement acrylic face, cut to the shape of your letter from a rubbing or pattern of the old one, in white or colored acrylic, with a new trim cap. Flame-retardant polycarbonate is available when a fire marshal asks for it.

If the power supply is the culprit, our 12 V outdoor supplies replace most channel letter supplies. Installation is not included. For letters high on a building, a local sign company with a lift is the safer choice; our repair project shows what a typical fix involves.

  • Switch off the power before you open a letter.
  • Match the color temperature of the modules already in the sign, or replace every module in that letter.
  • Before adding modules, check the power supply still has about 20 percent headroom.
  • For a new face, make a careful paper pattern and mark which side faces out.
  • Feed a long letter with several short runs of modules, each wired back to the supply, instead of one long chain.

Questions

One letter of my sign is dark. What is wrong?

Usually the LED modules or a connection inside that letter, since the rest of the sign has power. Open the face with the power off and look for a broken wire or a dark run of modules.

Can I repair a sign made by another company?

Usually, yes. Our LED modules run on 12 V and fit most channel letters, and replacement faces are cut from a pattern of your old face. Send photos if you are not sure.

Which LED color should I buy?

The same color temperature as the modules already in the sign: crisp white is usually 6500 K and warm, yellowish white is 3000 K.

Do you install repair parts?

No. We supply the parts. A handy person can swap modules or a face on a sign they can reach safely; for high signs, use a sign company with a lift.

Can a replacement face be flame-retardant?

Yes. Standard acrylic is not flame-retardant, so when a fire marshal asks, the face is cut from flame-retardant polycarbonate.

Can I cut a chain of LED modules?

Yes. Cut the wire between two modules, never through a module, then cap or seal the open ends and connect each run positive to positive and negative to negative.

Should I repair the sign or replace it?

If a few parts have failed and the letters themselves are sound, repair usually makes sense. When failures keep spreading across many letters, or the letters are corroded or damaged, a new sign may be the better buy.
