These are dimensional (3D) letters with no lighting: solid 304 stainless steel face and returns, built from your text or logo and mounted flush on threaded studs. They are the letters you see on office buildings, schools, churches, monuments and hotel lobbies, where the sign should look permanent and part of the architecture. You may also see them called metal sign letters, building letters or non-illuminated letters.
Most dimensional letters on the market are aluminum. Ours are 304 stainless steel, which is heavier and stiffer and does not rust through, so they suit facades and monuments outdoors as well as lobbies and reception walls indoors. With a brushed or mirror finish, what you see is the steel itself, not a coat of paint.
Finishes:
- Brushed (satin): a fine straight grain that softens reflections and hides fingerprints and small scratches better than polished metal.
- Mirror: polished to reflect the sky, the street or the room.
- Gold: a titanium-coated gold tone, brushed or mirror.
- Painted to your color.
By day, brushed stainless changes with the light. It looks bright silver in sun and soft grey in shade, and the edges catch highlights that make the letters read in three dimensions. After dark, non-lit letters are only as visible as the light that falls on them, so plan for a wall washer or spotlights if the sign must be seen at night.
Decide on lighting before you order. A non-lit letter can become a halo-lit letter later only by rebuilding it. Non-lit letters cost around three quarters of the same sign built halo-lit, so they are the economical choice when the sign does not need to glow.
Each set comes with a full-size paper template that marks every stud hole, plus the mounting hardware. We mount flush to the wall; standoffs only if you ask. Installation and permits are not included.

How to choose
First decide whether the sign must be seen at night. If it must glow, order halo-lit letters now; adding light later means new letters. If the building already has lighting on the wall, or the sign is mainly for daytime, non-lit stainless is the simpler and less costly choice.
Choose the finish for the setting. Brushed is the safe choice outdoors and anywhere people can touch the letters. Mirror suits interior feature walls where reflections add to the space. Gold and painted finishes tie the letters to brand colors or nearby materials. If your plans name a finish, such as No. 4 (brushed) or No. 8 (mirror), send that page with your request.
Measure the wall and note what it is made of: stone, brick, stucco, concrete or drywall. Send that, a photo and your text or logo; the drawing shows the letters at real size and the template marks each stud.
Questions
Will stainless steel letters rust?
304 stainless steel does not rust through. Near the ocean or where de-icing salt splashes, salt left on the surface can cause small spots, so rinse or wipe the letters from time to time.
Can I add lighting later?
Only by rebuilding the letters as halo-lit. If you think you will want them to glow, order halo-lit letters from the start.
How are the letters mounted?
Each letter has threaded studs on the back. You drill the holes marked on the full-size paper template and set the letters flush against the wall. Installation is not included.
Brushed or mirror finish?
Brushed hides fingerprints and small scratches better and looks calm in any light. Mirror reflects its surroundings and needs more cleaning; mirror and gold cost a little more in the estimator.
How will people see the letters at night?
Non-lit letters need light from elsewhere after dark, such as a wall washer or spotlights. If you want them to glow on their own, choose halo-lit letters.
Are these flat-cut letters or fabricated letters?
Fabricated. Each letter is built from a stainless steel face joined to its returns, the sides, so it has real depth and crisp edges, unlike a flat letter cut from a single plate. The depth is set on your drawing.
How do I clean stainless steel letters?
Wipe them with a soft cloth and warm water with a little mild soap, rinse with clean water and dry. On brushed letters, wipe along the grain. Skip steel wool, scouring pads and bleach or chlorine cleaners, which scratch or stain the surface.
How big should the letters be?
Size them for the distance people will read from; our letter height calculator gives a starting point. The price estimator covers letters from 4 in to 60 in tall, and the drawing shows them at real size on your wall.
