Matte black halo-lit letters, also called black back-lit or reverse channel letters, give you two signs in one. By day they are solid black dimensional letters, the strongest contrast you can put on a light wall. At night the faces stay dark and a ring of light appears around every letter, so the sign turns into a glowing outline.
Each letter is 304 stainless steel, face and returns painted matte black, with a translucent acrylic back. LEDs inside light the back, and the glow spreads onto the wall around the letter. The matte paint keeps the faces from catching glare, so the black reads as a clean shape from any angle.
Walls where black halo letters work well:
- White or light brick, where the halo picks out the texture of the brick.
- Light stucco and painted render.
- Smooth or board-formed concrete.
- Pale wood cladding and slat walls.
Avoid dark and glossy surfaces. A dark wall hides black letters by day and absorbs the halo at night; glossy tile, glass or polished stone mirrors the LEDs as bright spots. On a dark wall, a light backer panel behind the letters gives the halo a surface to land on.
The light color sets the mood. Cool white suits gyms, studios, garages and industrial spaces, where it looks crisp against black. Warm white suits restaurants, bars, coffee shops and hospitality, where it feels softer and more inviting. Neutral white sits between them, and adjustable white lets you change it after installation.
The letters mount flush to the wall. There is no gap and no visible post; the halo spreads from the back edge of each letter. A full-size paper template and the mounting hardware come with the sign, and we add standoffs only if you ask. Depth is typically 2 to 3 in, and the price estimator covers letters 4 in to 60 in tall.
Indoor letters plug in through a 100-240 V adapter. Outdoor letters use IP65 LED modules and a hard-wired outdoor power supply that a licensed electrician connects. The power supply and LED modules are UL / cUL listed components. Options are adjustable white and a dimmer with remote. Installation and permits are not included.

How to choose
Black halo letters need a light wall. On white brick, pale stucco, light concrete or wood they look sharp day and night; on a dark wall the letters disappear by day and the halo is weak at night, so choose a lighter finish or a backer panel instead. Treat glossy tile or polished stone like a dark wall: it mirrors the LEDs.
Then choose the light by the feeling of the space. Cool white for training floors, workshops and anything industrial; warm white for food, drinks and places where people linger. If the room changes from day to evening, adjustable white or a dimmer gives you room to adjust.
Bold, heavy fonts give the halo the most edge to work with and read best from a distance. Send your logo or text, the wall size and a photo of the wall, and the drawing shows the letters at real size, lit and unlit.
Questions
Do black letters disappear at night?
No. The faces stay dark, but the halo draws a bright outline around every letter, so the shape reads clearly against a light wall.
Cool white or warm white?
Cool white suits gyms and industrial spaces and looks crisp against black. Warm white suits restaurants and hospitality. Adjustable white lets you switch between them after installation.
Will they work on brick?
Yes, on white or light brick. The halo shows the texture of the brick around each letter, which suits an industrial look. The paper template shows exactly where to drill.
Are the letters black metal or painted?
They are 304 stainless steel with the face and returns painted matte black. The back is translucent acrylic, which lets the light out onto the wall.
Can I make the halo softer in the evening?
Yes. Add the dimmer with remote and set the brightness to suit the room.
Can they go outdoors?
Yes. Outdoor builds use IP65 LED modules and a hard-wired outdoor power supply that a licensed electrician connects. Installation and permits are not included.
What if my wall is dark?
Black letters disappear on a dark wall by day, and the halo is weak at night. Choose a lighter finish, such as brushed stainless, or mount the letters on a light backer panel.
Can black halo letters be read from the road?
They read as dark shapes outlined by light, which works at sidewalk, parking lot and lobby distances. For a sign that must be read from a fast road at night, front-lit letters are easier to read.
